Federation of Centres for Community Organisation

Translating faith into action in real life is the essence of witnessing. The Church in Mumbai has always worked at developing methods and strategies to redress injustice and provide relief to the downtrodden. Over the years, Centres for Community Organization [CCOs] have been set up in various parishes to address the needs of the people, to empower the poor and marginalised and to respond to people of all faiths.

On October 17, 1994, the long-felt need to strengthen the efforts of the various CCOs and other groups working in the Archdiocese of Bombay was realised with the formation of the Federation of Centres for Community Organisation [FCCO].

The aim in setting up the FCCO was to provide a platform wherein the CCOs could collaborate and share resources, information and expertise, and to create a solidarity movement that will enlighten and empower peoples’ organisations to bring about social transformation and social justice in society.

Broadly, the objectives of the FCCO are as follows:
  • To encourage and motivate individual CCOs to adopt the participatory human development approach in their work.
  • To provide opportunities and inputs for the staff of CCOs to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for participatory human development.
  • To provide guidance and consultancy to CCOs to further the process of participatory human development approach.
  • To disseminate information to CCOs on vital issues affecting society.
  • To encourage networking between CCOs as well as with other NGOs.
  • To initiate common programmes from time to time to enable individual CCOs to participate in joint ventures.

All CCOs and other NGOs that subscribe to the aim and objectives of the FCCO are eligible to apply for membership.

The core committee, elected from among member centres, is the governing body of the FCCO and is headed by a co-ordinator.

The co-ordinator of the FCCO is Fr Lancy Pinto.
