If the recognition of human rights is a universal phenomenon, the violation of these rights is equally universal. In such a situation, human rights education assumes great importance.

The International Human Rights Education Consortium [IHREC] promotes education, collaboration and research on human rights at the national, regional and global levels.

The Secretariat of the Consortium is located at Utica College (New York State, USA).

Membership is open to universities, colleges, non-governmental organisations, academics and activists involved in the human rights education effort.

In 2008, the IHREC set up regional units. The South Asian Desk operates from JPC Mumbai.
