Justice and peace can become a reality when human rights are acknowledged, respected and promoted. Individuals cannot attain their full potential if they are denied their legitimate rights. This vision has been duly realized in the Constitution of India. However, social attitudes and practices remain rooted in traditional beliefs and norms that ignore or violate human dignity and rights, thereby hindering the holistic development of the individual and society.
In keeping with the Commission’s commitment to uphold the rights and dignity of the human person, the Human Rights Watch Cell was set up on January 1, 1998, following a symposium to commemorate the fiftieth year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
